Designing Global Research Methods for Mobile-First Audiences

Mobile devices now account for well over 60% of global web traffic​. Culturally, our smartphones are where we look first for information, interaction, directions, and more. Plus, in many regions, the primary (and sometimes only) access to the internet is through smartphones. For global organizations, this reality underscores a clear mandate: design your studies mobile-first or risk missing an important subset of your audience. 

A mobile-first approach means crafting surveys and data collection strategies assuming respondents will be on a phone screen, and optimizing every step accordingly. Doing so reflects a fundamental shift in making research more inclusive, accessible, and reflective of real-world populations.

The Rise of the Mobile-First Audience

Not long ago, desktop computers dominated online surveys. Today, the balance has flipped and while billions rely on smartphones for information and communication, researchers often don’t reflect the same.

From young people in Toronto streaming videos on their phones, to farmers in rural Kenya accessing market prices via mobile internet, mobile-first audiences span all demographics.

Designing research with these users in mind is essential. If a survey isn’t mobile-friendly, large segments of the population will effectively be made invisible to your dataset. This is a problem, and at RIWI we believe that every voice counts.

To avoid this scenario, responsive design needs to be the baseline. But, mobile-first research goes further and takes into consideration the actual context of where, when, why, and how people use their smartphones. Mobile users are often on-the-go or multitasking, so any research study must successfully compete for attention in a crowded news feed or busy daily routine. Keeping this audience engaged means meeting them where they are (on their phones) and respecting their limited time and attention spans (we’re all guilty).

On another note, mobile-first design also promotes inclusivity. Traditional online research panels can skew toward those with ample free time or always-on broadband. By contrast, a mobile-oriented approach can reach people in hard-to-reach geographies and populations who may never sit down at a desktop to answer questions. 

Tips For Designing Small Screen Surveys With Big Results

Engaging a mobile respondent starts with streamlined survey design. On a five-inch smartphone display, brevity and clarity are king. Questions should be short and straightforward, avoiding technical jargon or lengthy instructions. It’s wise to use concise multiple-choice or slider questions instead of long text boxes that force users to type essays with their thumbs. Similarly, visual elements need to be used sparingly and load quickly. A single infographic or image can add visual interest, but large images or heavy videos may not display well on low-bandwidth mobile connections. A mobile-first survey should feel light and snappy. That means optimizing every element for speed and simplicity, from quick-loading pages to progress indicators that let users know the survey won’t take forever!

Some technical best practices for mobile survey design include:

  • Single-Column Layouts: Present one question at a time in a vertical scroll. This avoids the pinch-and-zoom frustration of horizontal layouts on phones.
  • Thumb-Friendly Buttons: Ensure response options are big enough to tap easily. Radio buttons or checkboxes should be clearly spaced for easy selection.
  • Quant Selections: Wherever possible, replace open text responses with drop-downs or predefined options. For instance, instead of asking an age to be entered, program the numeric keypad to pop up for easier use.
  • Test Across Devices: A survey that works on a latest-model iPhone might look different on an older Android with a smaller screen. Testing your questionnaire on various devices and screen sizes helps catch formatting issues early.

Crucially, mobile-first surveys should be short. Lengthy questionnaires lead to higher dropout rates, especially on mobile.

Reaching Those Who Are Rarely Reached

One of the biggest advantages of mobile-centric research is the ability to engage audiences who have been historically hard to reach. Mobile phones are nearly ubiquitous – far more so than traditional survey methods like home phones or mailed questionnaires. This ubiquity allows researchers to tap into opinions of people who might never join an online research panel or stop to answer an in-store intercept poll. Reaching a bigger, more diverse audience is a major victory of mobile-first research. With that said, mobile-first should not mean sacrificing additional methodological rigor. Techniques like randomization, validation checks, and careful question design are as vital as they are on the desktop. In fact, some challenges become more pronounced on mobile, including survey fraud. 

Truly random, unsolicited participation inherently reduces fraud because respondents are not incentivised. Eye-tracking and implicit association tests also can’t be faked by bots. Thoughtful mobile surveys should include a variety of these mechanisms to ensure data quality.

Finally, maintaining quality means keeping mobile surveys user-friendly to avoid frustrating or fatiguing respondents. A clunky survey on a phone can lead to drop-outs or hasty, careless answers. By contrast, an intuitive mobile survey with progress bars, the ability to easily swipe or tap through answers, and a tidy design will keep respondents engaged longer, yielding more thoughtful responses.
