How to Measure Gut Reactions: A Simple Look at System 1 Tools

Understanding quick, gut-level reactions is powerful for any brands looking to make an impact. In this article, we’ll define System 1 thinking, and why these instant responses matter. What Is System 1 Thinking?

Humans think on two levels. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman famously described System 1 as the brain’s intuitive, quick-thinking system, while System 2 is the deliberate, slow-thinking system.

System 1 operates automatically and unconsciously, producing instant impressions or feelings in response to a stimulus. It requires little effort or information to produce a reaction, and it often enables simple decisions or everyday judgments to be made on auto-pilot. This fast thinking helps us navigate the world efficiently, but it also means many of our preferences or aversions happen below the surface of conscious thought. 

System 2 thinking, in contrast, is conscious and analytical. It kicks in when careful reasoning is needed, a complex decision has to be made, or when encountering a challenging task that requires focus. In short, System 1 is snap judgment; System 2 is deliberate thought.

Why Should We Care About Immediate Responses?

For one, people don’t always say what they truly feel. In surveys or interviews (a System 2 activity), respondents might censor themselves or give answers that sound acceptable. Biases and true feelings often stay hidden, sometimes even from the person experiencing them themselves. Gut reactions, however, can betray those hidden attitudes. They reflect automatic associations and emotions that people may not openly admit or even realize they have. In other words, measuring System 1 can reveal the hidden or subconscious attitudes behind polished words.

Moreover, gut reactions influence behavior in powerful ways. Instant emotional responses, like a flash of attraction to a product or a quick feeling of distrust in an advertisement, can significantly shape decisions such as what we purchase or which brand we prefer. Traditional research methods alone may miss these subtleties. A respondent might not recall a fleeting feeling during a commercial, or might downplay a negative impression when filling out a survey. System 1 tools help bypass memory limits and social desirability biases, allowing for a more accurate read on how people react in the moment. 

Reaction Time Testing – Timing the Instincts

One straightforward way to measure gut reactions is through reaction time tests (RTT). These tests track how fast someone responds to a given stimulus or task. The premise is simple: if something feels intuitive or agreeable, people will react almost instantly. If something feels wrong or doesn’t match their expectations, there’s a slight hesitation. 

How it works: In a typical reaction time task, a participant might be asked to quickly categorize words or images under time pressure. For example, a person might press a key as fast as possible to indicate whether a displayed word is “positive” or “negative” in sentiment. The faster the reaction, the more instinctive the connection. If a response takes longer, it could mean the participant had to engage System 2 thinking. This signals that the stimulus may have been confusing, contradictory, or not an automatic fit.

What it reveals: Faster reaction times often signal a stronger subconscious association between concepts. For instance, if someone responds faster when pairing a brand’s logo with the word “trustworthy” than with “unreliable,” it suggests a positive gut-level association with the brand. 

Implicit Association Tests – Uncovering Hidden Biases

Developed by psychologists in the late 1990s, the IAT is designed to reveal the subconscious associations or attitudes people hold toward certain ideas or groups. In an IAT, respondents rapidly sort words or images into categories, and the pattern of their mistakes and speed reveals how strongly those concepts are linked in their mind.

How it works: Let’s consider a classic IAT scenario. In this scenario, words related to “family” or “career” would appear on a screen, and the participant must categorize them under “male” or “female” as quickly as possible. In one round, “family” might share a key with “female” and “career” with “male.” In a later round, the pairings would then swap. If someone finds it easier (faster, with fewer errors) when “female + family” are paired (and struggles when “female + career” are paired), it suggests an implicit stereotype linking women more with family roles. In fact, a standard IAT experiment found that many people more readily associate women with family than with career, even if they consciously believe both genders are equally career-oriented. Such a result highlights a gut-level bias that traditional surveys might not catch, as the same respondents are likely to claim no difference in attitude.

What it reveals: Implicit association tests unveil the automatic links in our mind. From social biases (like attitudes about race, gender, or age) to brand perceptions (which logo you subconsciously connect with “quality” or “value”), the power of IATs lies in their ability to highlight the contrast between stated beliefs and instant reactions. 

Facial Expression Analysis – Reading Micro-Expressions

In reality, most gut reactions outside of button presses or keystrokes. Our faces often give away what we’re feeling before we even say a word. Facial expression analysis, also known as micro-expression analysis or facial coding, is a System 1 measurement tool that decodes the tiny, involuntary facial movements we make in response to stimuli. These micro-expressions might only last fractions of a second and could be represented by a brief raise of the eyebrows or a quick smirk or frown. However fleeting, they can reveal a person’s true emotional state.

How it works: Modern facial analysis uses a device’s camera (webcam or smartphone camera) to monitor a participant’s face as they view content. Advanced software, often rooted in research by psychologists like Dr. Paul Ekman (a pioneer in studying emotions), tracks micro-expressions frame by frame. The system then automatically classifies emotions based on facial muscle patterns. 

What it reveals: Facial expression analysis lets researchers capture genuine emotional reactions that people might not verbalize. For instance, if someone watching a commercial flashes a brief look of skepticism or confusion at a particular scene, that micro-expression is valuable feedback, it shows where the content might not be resonating. Similarly, a quick smile at the moment a brand appears on screen indicates a positive immediate reaction that a follow-up questionnaire might miss if the viewer has forgotten that initial moment. 

In practice, the best insights often come from combining System 1 and System 2 research. Gut-reaction tools like those described above excel at uncovering subconscious feelings and immediate impressions. Meanwhile, traditional methods (surveys, interviews, etc.) capture the reflective, reasoned responses that people can articulate. When used together, these approaches paint a more complete picture.
