Iranian Protest Tracker

Since the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested by morality police in Tehran on 13 September for allegedly violating Iran’s strict rules requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab, people have been protesting across Iran, even in the face of a deadly crackdown by security forces.

Despite the major disruptions to Internet access, since early October 2022, we’ve been using RIWI technology to hear directly from Iranians online and gather evidence on the protests.

Questions include:

  • Are there currently protests in their city?
  • Are the protests getting stronger or weaker in their local area?
  • Do most people they know support or oppose protestors in their local area?

RIWI is collecting these data on a daily basis, and asked these same questions during previous protests, enabling comparisons. To access or learn more about these data, please contact us at ask@riwi.com.
